Who are we? Where do we belong? Why do we exist? These existential inquiries persist as we navigate the complexities of existence. From the mundane choices of seating arrangements in classrooms to the profound quest for societal identity, and even our place amidst advancing technology, our search for belonging is incessant. We recoil from the disorienting sensation of floating aimlessly, yearning for solid ground beneath our feet. Hence, we persistently seek, endeavoring to discover that elusive "position" where we can anchor ourselves securely.
In our pursuit of this elusive "position," we have identified three primary sub-themes.
(1) The Relationship Between the Individual and the External World
Throughout history, humanity has persistently delved into the relationship between the self and its surroundings, as well as the connections forged among individuals.
This encompasses the interplay between our bodies and the ambient environment, influencing our perception and sense of orientation. Moreover, an individual's positioning is not solely influenced by spatial and physical environments but is also shaped by cultural identity and social status. Through these explorations, we contemplate how to navigate the multifaceted and ever-evolving landscape of our world to establish a sense of self amidst its complexities.
(2) The Influence and Constraints of Technology
Technological advancements offer us expanded possibilities and conveniences but also bring new challenges and constraints. Through the exhibited artworks, we explore the effects of technology on individuals, including issues such as information overload, breaches of privacy, and manipulation of personal data. We strive to contemplate how to uphold our independence and autonomy amid technological progress, establishing our position amidst the wave of technological advancement.
(3) The Intersection of Reality and Virtuality in Positioning
As technology progresses, the boundaries between time and space gradually blur, rendering our positioning increasingly intricate. Beyond merely locating ourselves in the tangible world, we now aspire to imprint our presence in the digital realm. Platforms such as social media, online identities, and virtual personas become avenues through which we articulate our personal stances, reclaim memories, and forge social connections. Amidst the interplay of past experiences, current uncertainties, and future aspirations, how do we discern what truly constitutes reality?
In the exhibition "Acquiring your signal…", through seventeen distinct pieces, artists aim to delve into the concept of individual positioning in both physical and societal realms, each through their unique perspectives. They explore this notion from diverse angles, considering how technology influences individuals and their autonomy in this modern age. In a world characterized by constant flux, their objective is to establish a sense of stability, guiding both the audience and themselves toward defining and molding their unique "position."
